The World Bank begins Review and Update of Safeguard Policies – October 10, 2012

The World Bank has begun a two-year process to review and update its environmental and social safeguard policies.  According to the World Bank, “these policies embody core values of the institution and are the cornerstone of the Bank’s efforts to protect people and the environment and to ensure sustainable development outcomes.”

On October 10, 2012 the Committee of Development Effectiveness of the World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors endorsed the three-phase approach, described in The World Bank’s Safeguard Policies Proposed Review and Update.

From October 2012 until February 15, 2013 (Consultation Period 1), the World Bank will collect input to the review – online, in face-to-face meetings and through focus groups.

From May through October 2013 (Consultation Period 2), the World Bank will collect feedback on the first draft of the integrated framework, – online, in face-to-face meetings and through focus groups.

From January through March 2014 (Consultation Period 3), the World Bank will collect feedback on the second draft of the integrated framework – online and in targeted face-to-face discussions.
