On February 2, 2017 the Latvian business daily Dienas Bizness published an interview with Geoffrey Mazullo, Principal, Emerging Markets ESG and Chair of the Evaluation Committee of the Baltic Market Awards. In the interview entitled, “Socially responsible investment is not a fairy tale,” Mr. Mazullo describes what SRI is – in both developed and emerging markets – and dispels myths about what it is not.
He outlines the range of SRI strategies currently employed (including, from least comprehensive to most comprehensive – ethical/negative screening, norms based investing, sustainability themed investment, best in class, engagement and voting, and integration of environmental, social and governance (ESG) considerations into the investment process) and describes different SRI products, such as green bonds, SRI funds and sustainability indices. These products exist today and are not “science fiction” or “wishful thinking.” Mr. Mazullo also provides some insights about recently-published research about SRI performance vis-à-vis mainstream investment performance.
