On March 30, 2017 the editorial team at Innovation Forum predicted that “(t)rading preferences with Europe will be scrapped unless Bangladesh implements ILO-recommended factory worker rights.”
According to the editorial, “(t)he European commission says that it is essential Bangladesh implements recommendations made by an International Labour Organisation committee in 2016, or risk being shut out from the current beneficial tariffs system – known as the Generalised Scheme of Preferences – that it currently enjoys.”
The European Commission’s position raises yet again the question of what has changed in Bangladesh since the Rana Plaza factory collapse in 2013, which claimed the lives of over 1,000 workers.
