In an article in the Guardian Sustainable Business entitled, “The future of fairtrade in South America” Oliver Balch opines that “market awareness in the region is gradually rising as companies and consumers begin to realise the rewards it brings.”

According to the article, Brazil is the only South American country with a domestic fair trade market today, but the concept is spreading to other countries, including Argentina, Chile, Ecuador and Paraguay.  Initiatives in each of these countries are described.  Challenges include low median incomes and a lack of consumer consciousness about Fair Trade.
