In spring 2020, IFC and Amundi published the second edition of their joint Emerging Markets Green Bonds Report.
“As countries face many challenges in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, green finance provides innovative solutions for building robust economies. The next decade is critical for transitioning to low-carbon economies and mobilizing investment for sustainable development. Investor appetite for green bonds continues to grow, and emerging market issuers are likely to benefit from increasing demand. Emerging market green bond issuances in 2019 amounted to $52 billion, a 21 percent increase from 2018, bringing the outstanding bonds to $168 billion.
This second edition of the joint IFC-Amundi ‘Emerging Market Green Bonds Report’ explains where there has been growth and where there is potential. Although there are still barriers to entry and numerous challenges to address, the market is poised for growth over the coming years, with nascent green bond markets scaling up if certain steps are taken. An update on the mobilization efforts of policy makers and case studies on specific countries and regions provide additional context for the potential of certain markets.”
